Yes, It might be an odd name for a wedding photography site, but there is actually a good reason for choosing such a name.

We both know that getting a good wedding photographer is important! The wedding pictures will be with you a lifetime, you want to be able to look back at them remembering one of your happiest days ever. You want the love and the happiness to shine through in your wedding pictures.

You want to capture the moments.

Before I got started in this epic quest to find a qualified wedding photographer, I didn`t know much about wedding photography other than my own experience and from what my friends have told me. I didn`t know much about digital camera equipment, how to fix the images in programs I do not even know the name of, how to use a flash, lighting I was a total amateur… and still am. We want to leave all that up to the pros.

But what I will cover at Wedding Photography Akron, is a little bit about technology, different approaches to take to wedding photography, what to think about when it comes to albums and prints. I will also display some beautiful wedding pictures.

The last thing you need is to hire an unprofessional hobby photographer, who wants to make some extra money shooting pics with his useless camera. Even if you find a professional photographer with a great portfolio you want to make sure it is a pleasant person to have around on your wedding day.

A friend of mine hired a well known photographer in town, a great photographer but he was a pain to have around on her big day. He was constantly complaining about the air conditioning, even asked if her sister was going to wear her hair like that… I know can you believe it. He also rushed them all day “hurry, hurry”. They got beautiful pictures but she could not stand the man after that.

For my own wedding we hired “the” photographer in town, he was wonderful before the big day but on our wedding day he shows up late. I had specific requests about some pictures that I wanted to have taken and they were not done. We have a lot of wonderful pictures from our day but I was still disappointed considering the price we paid.

And that is it, the prices are all over the board when you hire a wedding photographer. You can get ripped off very easily, since hiring a wedding photographer is not something we do very often. We have no idea how much this should cost…

Do not rely on the Better Business Bureau, most people are not aware of this but they are not any type of official governing and in fact they are paid by the businesses that they represent.

I was doing some research for this particular post, different styles of wedding photography, here at Wedding Photography Akron when I found this article. It is a guy from Ireland that has written it and I could not have explained it better so I want to share the article with you:

The Different Styles of Wedding Photography

Your wedding day is one of the major milestones of your life. With all the money you spend on that perfect dress, your beautiful flowers, your romantic venue and the many other things that go together to create your perfect day, you want your memories recorded to reflect your personality and style.

Different photographers shoot in different styles and it is important to cut through the sales pitch and the fancy jargon to find one that can help you match the vision for your wedding photographs.

I have outlined the 3 main styles of wedding photography available today, although in many cases it is possible for a photographer to shoot in more than one style.

Traditional wedding photography

Traditional, or sometimes called Classical wedding photography captures the traditional wedding day pictures including the unforgettable moments of your wedding day including the exchange of rings, signing the marriage register, walking down the aisle as husband and wife, family groups and the cutting of the cake to name a few.

Weddings are still considered formal occasions and this type of wedding photography has stood the test of time. With careful lighting and expert posing traditional wedding photography creates a perfect record of your family gathering. This style is not to be confused with well executed traditional photography where the skill of the photographer makes the photograph look natural and not posed.

The growth of Reportage wedding photography appears to have coincided with the growth of digital photography due to the low expenses per photograph that reportage style of photograph thrives on. Unfortunately, many new or inexperienced wedding photographers use the “shot gun” approach shooting thousands of pictures during the wedding day in the hope that they capture a few good shots.

A word of warning: If you choose a photographer who shoots exclusively in this style many couples regret not having some traditional photographs in their album. With reportage wedding photography you are relying on the photographers interpretation of your day. The couples parents are usually the first to complain about the lack of traditional images in your album.

Contemporary wedding photography

Contemporary, sometimes called Avant Garde wedding photography can mean many different things to different people. By definition, to be contemporary the style is constantly changing which could mean the images date very quickly.

Contemporary wedding photography can involve unusual or “off the wall” ideas and use strange camera angles. This style of photography brings more of the photographers personality into the photograph together with the artistic vision or individual style of the photographer. Although this style of photography may be less popular, when done correctly the results can be fantastic and your wedding album will be unique.

Many wedding photographers use contemporary style images in professional photography awards and you will often see this style featured in glossy wedding magazines.

The downside of this style of wedding photography is that it doesn’t really provide a true record of your wedding day. You might be disappointed if your albums ends up like an art exhibition.

2. Get a photographer that communicates.

When you contact your possible wedding photographer make sure he communicates with you. Photographers have flexible hours and may work on different schedules but does he get back to you in a reasonable time? Is there a phone number you can call him at, is there an email where you can get hold of him?

You want to be able to get hold of your wedding photographer.

3. What style do you want, what kind of approach do you want to take?

There is different styles or approaches you can take with your wedding pictures, do you want a traditional or more of a photojournalistic approach. With the photojournalistic approach the photographer wants to tell the story of your wedding day, they want to catch the reality; they look for natural moments to capture.

Then you need to think about how you want your pictures processed do you want them in color or black and white or maybe a mix.

4. Did someone recommend your photographer?

If you feel like your photographer is telling you how things should be and are not open to listen to what you want, you might want to rethink your choice of photographer. Make sure there is a two way communication with your photographer. Make sure he knows how you want your wedding pictures.
